Future Arts Complex TOUR - April 9

April 6, 2008

On Wednesday, April 9 at 7 p.m,, Bastrop County residents
are invited to view the two warehouses that Upstart wants
to use as an arts space—a place for classrooms,
instructions, exhibition and performance space in pottery,
painting, writing, music, sculpture and dance.

“It’s what’s called ‘raw space’ now,” says Carolyn Banks,
Upstart’s executive director. “But in a couple of years, it
will provide wonderful opportunities for everyone in the
county.”

Bastrop Economic Development Corporation bought this space
for Upstart with an eye to this conversion last year. Since
the, the nonprofit Upstart has been busily readying the
space for what is known as “repurposing.” That means
changing it from its former use as a furniture factory to
the arts complex they envision.

“I hope people will come for the walk-through,” says
Upstart Executive Director Carolyn Banks. “It’s important
that everyone in Bastrop, Smithville and Elgin get behind
this transformation.”

Upstart will provide cold drinks and munchies the evening
of the walk-through. Those who come will get a tour of the
UMAC as well as two now-empty warehouses. “We haven’t named
the complex,” Banks laughs, “but if some major corporation
or donor wants to kick in $50,000 or more for this
renovation, we’ll be happy to call it whatever the donor
wants. But seriously,” she adds, “all donations are
tax-deductible and we’d appreciate any help we can get.”

Call 303-1531 or 321-2496 for more information. The arts
complex will be at the corner of Linda and Cypress Streets
in Bastrop. Linda parallels Texas Highway 95 and is one
block west of it. The building is near Bastrop High School.
“This is going to be a place where people of all ages can
realize their dreams,” Banks says, “so we hope everyone
will come see.”
