SCREENING: Luis Buñuel’s THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL

February 1, 2008

UPSTART, INC. will present surrealist film director Luis
Buñuel’s THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL at the fourth of its
WINTER 2008 SUNDAY SCREENING SERIES. A guest host will lead
audience members in a discussion of this unusual 1962 film
immediately following the screening.

Spanish-born, Luis Buñuel spent most of his adult life in
Mexico where The Exterminating Angel was shot. This film
is regarded as one of the “new wave” of exciting,
innovative films that stunned audiences in the late 1950s
and early 1960s, influencing subsequent generations of
filmmakers. In The Exterminating Angel , Buñuel spins an
allegorical tale of fashionable society people who arrive
for a posh dinner party, only to find that some mysterious
compulsion keeps them from leaving the party at the end of
the evening. As the night and subsequent days wear on, the
high tone guests, still in their elegant evening clothes,
are stripped of all social artifice, reduced to desperate
animal behavior to survive while trapped in their host’s
fancy home.
[Warning: this film is not appropriate for children]
