Guest discussion leader is journalist Chris Walters.
Walters wrote about movies for the Austin American
Statesman, Austin Chronicle, and Movieline magazine in the
'80s and '90s.

A dedicated student of cinema for over thirty years, he
fell in love with European cinema as a teenager watching
Fellini films. Fellini’s work ushered Italy into the “new
wave” of exciting, innovative cinema that swept across
Europe in the late 1950s and early 1960s, influencing
subsequent generations
of filmmakers like Woody Allen and Sophia Coppola.

In La Dolce Vita, Fellini captured the moral wasteland of
fashionable Rome during the post WWII “economic miracle”
with memorable images (such as the famous scene of screen
goddess Anita Ekberg wading in the Fontana di Trevi). The
story follows the spiritual decay and downward spiral of a
sensationalist journalist portrayed by Marcello
Mastroianni.
Mastroianni was considered to be one of the foremost
European
actors during his long career that spanned the last half of

the 20th century. He later portrayed a disaffected film
director in Fellini’s autobiographical masterpiece 8 ½.

La Dolce Vita won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film
Festival
in 1960 and received four Academy Award nominations, and
one
Oscarâ. [Warning: this film runs over two hours long, and
is
not appropriate for children]

Popcorn provided; suggested donation $5.
